Child & Adolescent Therapy

As adults, we often talk and write about feelings, thoughts and experiences.  For children and adolescents, we work to utilize activity-based play and creative therapies.  For children, play is a way of expressing themselves to others.  The toy a child chooses in the playroom demonstrates their thoughts, feelings and experiences.  The child’s play allows the therapist to go into the world of experiences that the child brings with them.

How does Play Therapy work?

During a play therapy session, the therapist identifies themes that emerge during the session.  A play therapist may verbalize a thought or feeling occurring in play for the child, use the theme as a metaphor to confront difficult issues or to help a child rehearse new ways of interacting with others.  The purpose is to help the child have healthier relationships, take responsibility for their behavior, identify negative patterns, learn coping skills, learning social skills and gain self-esteem.

In working with adolescent clients, we work to identity common themes, explore areas of interests to aid in developing coping mechanisms, social skills, emotional regulation and communication skills.

Some of the issues addressed in working with children and adolescents include:

  • Social Skill Development
  • Emotional Regulation
  • Anger Management
  • Coping Skills (Anxiety & Depression)
  • Career Exploration
  • Adjusting to Placement in Foster Care & Adoption

Marriage & Family Therapy

Whether you are seeking to improve your relationship or find yourself at a crossroads in your relationship, we are here to walk alongside of you in the journey.  When you make the decision to seek help in your relationship, you are recognizing the need to seek an outside perspective.  Our goal in the first session is to join with you and discover the reason for seeking counseling, your goals of what you hope to accomplish in counseling and any important life history in relation to your goals.

You are the one making the decisions and determine the path of your counseling journey.

We partner with you and your spouse to understand the cause and possible solutions to your relationship conflict.  A strained relationship with negative communication and behaviors patterns impacts children as well as parents.  We want to help you become your best self for your family.

Some couples don’t know if they want to stay married when they come to counseling.  Counseling is a step for a couple to make decision and move forward or accept the decision of their partner.  For a relationship to move forward, each partner must accept responsibility for their part in the relationships and be willing to take the necessary steps to improve the relationship.

Counseling can provide the framework for taking responsibility, acknowledging acceptance, seeking forgiveness, moving towards reconciliation and improving the relationship.

In working with couples, there are common themes which often get addressed in counseling including:

  • Learned behaviors from childhood and family of origin
  • Finances
  • Communication
  • Infidelity & Sexual Betrayal
  • Intimacy Issues
  • Addiction
  • Parenting (Blended Families/Co-Parenting)

For couples who are preparing for marriage and desire to get a jump start on addressing some of the common problems in relationships, we offer the opportunity for couples to complete Prepare Enrich Assessment.  This allows counseling to be customized for each couple identifying strength and growth areas.  This tool allows the couple to learn more about their relationship and the counselor to provide resources to increase marital satisfaction.

The Prepare-Enrich assessment topics include:

  • Spiritual Beliefs
  • Couples Mission Statement and Goals
  • Strength and Growth Areas for the Relationships
  • Resolving Conflict
  • Listening Skills
  • Identifying Personality Traits
  • Financial Budgeting
  • Family of Origin Concerns
  • Major Stressors in the Relationship
